Explore the range, complexity, and narrative power of African American literature and learn how creative writing impact American history and social change. With a particular focus on women writers—whose work often found beauty amidst the pain of racial inequality— this seminar will examine what literature can teach us about America’s struggle to align its political practices more closely to its founding ideals.

This program will be conducted as a discussion, utilizing primary source documents as the only readings with the Professor facilitating the conversation, instead of lecturing or presenting. Registrants, therefore, are highly encouraged to read all the documents in advance and come ready with questions. Teachers will receive a Letter of Attendance at the conclusion of the seminar.
