Register for "Westward Expansion: Conflict, Conservation and the Environment"

November 21, 2024, 8:30 AM MT - 2:15 PM MT | Hosted by: Phoenix Union Schools | Carl Hayden Community High School | Phoenix, AZ | Discussion Leader: David Tucker

America’s vision of westward expansion and its “Manifest Destiny” sounded magnificent on paper, but what would it take to expand from sea to shing sea? This seminar will examine early visions of the west, the conflict that arose during the 19th century and the rise of the conservation and environmental movements in the 20th century. Primary documents as well as images from the Hudson River school of landscape paintings will be explored.

This program will be conducted as a discussion, utilizing primary source documents as the only readings, and with Professor Tucker facilitating the conversation, instead of lecturing or presenting. Registrants, therefore,
are highly encouraged to read all the
documents in advance and come ready with questions.  Teachers will receive a Letter of Attendance at the conclusion of the seminar.

"It gave me a better understanding of the Founders’ views. They saw that restricting religious liberty is not only wrong; it leads to animosity within society. This year, I will begin both my government class and my class on “Law and Modern Society” with George Washington’s Letter to the Hebrew Congregation at Newport." — Sean B.
