Register for "African American Civil Rights"

February 23, 2024, 8:30 AM CT - 2:30 PM CT | Hosted by: Gregg County Historical Museum | Longview, TX | Discussion Leader: Professor Charissa Threat

The Civil Rights Movement in America has endured a difficult and tumultuous path. The Emancipation Proclamation ended the institution of slavery. The Fourteenth Amendment should have guaranteed freedoms, equality, and civil rights for all men, however it would take many generations of hardships and court cases for that reality to be achieved. Join us around the table for a discussion of this complicated road.

This program will be conducted as a Socratic discussion, utilizing primary source documents as the only readings in our conversation. All attendees of this free professional development will receive lunch, a letter of attendance, as well as paper and digital copies of the reader.

"It gave me a better understanding of the Founders’ views. They saw that restricting religious liberty is not only wrong; it leads to animosity within society. This year, I will begin both my government class and my class on “Law and Modern Society” with George Washington’s Letter to the Hebrew Congregation at Newport." — Sean B.
