Through discussion of primary documents, the seminar will examine how Americans have thought about earning a living and organizing their economic life. Focused on the connection between politics and economics, it will address questions such as: what is the relationship between political equality and economic equality? Do republican government and national greatness require different ways of working and different economic organization? Are commerce, industry, and technology the enemy of republicanism or a necessary part of any thriving nation? What is the proper role of commercial corporations, including banks, in American economic life? What is the proper role of government in American economic life?
