Explore the recurring use of Biblical allusions, tropes, and types as ways of shaping and understanding American public life from the colonial era through the present day. Original documents considered include speeches and letters from Washington, Lincoln, Kennedy, Obama, and others. Themes explored include the meaning of the Exodus narrative to the Puritans and the African-American church; Biblical justification of pacifism, civil disobedience, and even revolution.
