Martin Van Buren is often seen as the architect of the modern party system and structure, served Andrew Jackson during his two terms as president, and went on to serve one term himself. In these excerpts from his autobiography he discuses the importance and function of political parties, providing modern readers with a sense of the origins of a party system we would recognize.
